Mt. Sinai, N.Y. – For golfers in the Northeast, the arrival of the dreaded autumnal equinox signals the end of the golf season is near. Golf Associations are busy preparing for their final events. So it is with the maiden season of the Philippine Golf Invitational Tour of New York.
The final qualifying round played on September 20th at the beautiful but treacherous Hamlet/Willow Creek Golf and Country Club in Mt. Sinai,New York yielded a winner known for his ability to manage the terrain. From the back tee, players had difficulty negotiating the water hazards and bunkers that littered all the holes.
In essence, the golf course won as nobody broke par. Coming out the winner of the “Clint Mendoza Cup” was Ramon Atienza of New Jersey. For his first win, he shot a net 73. George Javier placed 2nd and Clint Mendoza 3rd. Tied for 4th place were John Gregorios,Eric Do and this writer. Final consolation prize went to Joe Barreno. Closest to the pin winners were Allan Adonay and John Gregorios on the Front nine and Ralph Mapili and Bernie Sta. Juana on the back nine.
Atienza’s easy going and unassuming

Atienza’s easy going and unassuming
demeanor belies his golf course a*****en. He is well liked by his peers.
The darkening sky was brightened by the highlight of the day, a HOLE IN ONE by BERNIE STA.JUANA on the undulating green of the 174 yards 16th. As the saying goes, an ACE makes you a complete golfer. To do it in a tournament witnessed by friends and golf foes alike makes it even more special. CHEERS for the first ever recorded hole in one in PGI TOUR NY tournament history.
